One of the questions homeowners always ask, unsurprisingly, is how long it will take to replace an exterior door, and whether they’re going to be left overnight with no door.
The good news is that door replacements can usually be done in a single day, so your home is not left in an insecure state.
The process typically involves four stages.
- Remove the old door and frame. This is usually relatively quick and easy.
- Prepare the opening. This is often the most complex part of the job, especially if any remodeling is required to accommodate a larger or differently shaped door.
- Install the new door and frame. If the door and frame are a single piece, we put the entire unit in place and ensure it is level before securing it. If the frame is separate, that will be constructed first, and then the doors placed on the hinges. At this point, your home will be fully secure, even if we have to return and finish off the job the following day.
- Add insulation and trim. Once everything is in place, we add any final touches including paintwork if required.
In most cases, a door replacement will take just a few hours for our experienced team of contractors. Even in more complex cases – for example, where we’re installing transom windows and sidelight windows at the same time – the primary installation can normally be done in a day.
