One of the best things about living here in Bonita Springs is our glorious weather. A sliding glass door allows you to enjoy the sunshine and the amazing view while staying safely in the air-conditioning inside your home. But that’s not the only reason to consider installing sliding doors.
- Add extra space to your room.
A conventional door requires about three feet of clear space to open. That can restrict your design choices and your furniture placement. In smaller spaces, that can be very inconvenient. Sliding doors free up floor space and give you more options with how to arrange your room.
- Sliding doors improve access.
Most sliding doors are slightly wider than traditional doors. That can be useful for getting large objects such as beds or couches into and out of your house, or for wheelchair users.
- Keep an eye on what’s going on outside.
Your glass doors will give you a great view of the garden. If the kids or grandchildren are playing outside, you can watch them easily without having to sit outside in the heat. If you have a suitably placed armchair or sofa, you won’t even need to keep getting up to check on what they’re doing!
- Merge the interior and exterior of your home.
Having a large opening in your house creates a very different dynamic to your home and changes the room flow. The natural light and the visibility of trees, grass or other plants provides a soft transition between the inside and outside. If you’re having a social event, guests can easily move from inside to out without having to squeeze through a small doorway. By thinking of the interior and exterior decor as a single, seamless design and incorporating common elements into the color and texture, you make your room feel bigger and more relaxing.
Customers are often discouraged from using sliding doors for a number of reasons. It’s true that in years gone by, there were problems, but modern sliding doors are much better than those of the 1970s.
- They’re hard to open. WRONG!
The sliding mechanisms are extremely gentle and reliable, and the doors will open with a light touch. Better still, they won’t slam shut in the wind or swing shut while you’re in the middle of bringing in the shopping.
- They make the room hot. WRONG!
The UV filters and insulation on modern glass will keep your room cool in summer and warm in winter. Thermally, it’s as efficient as your walls, and probably more efficient than your roof!
- They let in too much sun. WRONG!
If you find that there’s too much direct sun coming into your room, then you can simply cover the doors with lightweight blinds. This effectively allows you to switch between a closed environment and an open one. Take a look at these pictures on Pinterest for ideas on using blinds.
- They’re not secure. WRONG!
Modern glass is incredibly tough. It’ll handle hurricanes and burglars with ease, and it won’t shatter.
